Loner: The story of a broken wolf family

Prologue

The two wolves huddled together under the shade of the elm tree, looking at their newly born son.
The female looked up at her mate. “Conan, what should we name him? It needs to be perfect.”
Conan looked at her sadly. “I don’t know what to say, Star. I can’t thi-” Conan perked his ears. He lowered himself to the ground and motioned for Star to do the same. They waggled over to some brush. “Did you hear that?” he growled.
Star shook her head, frightened. “We need to get Adoff to safety!” When Conan tilted his head she made a gesture to show that that was her son’s name.
“I think humans are in the forest…” Conan started. Then his eyes grew wide and his ears and tail lifted. “Star, take Adoff and run!”
Without hesitation Star grabbed her son and bolted away from Conan. He ran after her only to see Star fall to the ground, with Adoff in her jaws. Conan’s poor son struggled to get free, but to no avail. By the time Conan had loped to his mate’s still body there was a rustling in the bushes and two humans stepped out and grabbed her. Conan prayed to his ancestor’s before jumping forward and snarling at the humans. They dropped Star and he crouched forward to drag her away when he remembered Adoff. Conan scented the air. Adoff had crawled into the bushes and flopped down when he was out of sight. His son would be safe for now.
The humans stepped forward using harsh tones. One of them took out a thick stick and aimed the point at him. Conan lunged forward and knocked the stick out of his hands. Then took Star by then neck again and started to haul her away. The humans took pursuit and quickly caught up. They pried Conan’s mate from his jaws and then Conan’s world went black.

Chapter 1

Conan nuzzled Adoff and growled in his ear. Adoff immediately shot up, fully awake.
After growing up always on the move and always in danger, Adoff had learned that any suspicious noises meant wake up. Adoff didn’t know why they were always moving, his father, Conan, wouldn’t say. Only that it had to do with his mother. Adoff had never met his mother.
Conan barred his teeth at Adoff and stretched. “Do you know what I was doing this morning?” he said to his son.
Adoff shook his head. He marveled at his father, the wolf he was closest to. Conan was good looking, no doubt. He had a long dark brown coat, and rippling muscles underneath that. Conan was, huge, strong, and extremely fast. And you wouldn’t notice his age except for the gray hairs on his muzzle. Whenever they met another group of wolves, the females would snuggle up to him. Conan hardly noticed.
Adoff had no idea where his snow-white coat came from, and he hated it. He couldn’t hunt like his father because they prey always saw him.
But to get around that they had a special technique. Adoff would get in front of the prey to scare them and Conan would creep up behind them and make the kill when they turned to run off.
Adoff was shaken out of his dazing when Conan grabbed his scruff and flipped him onto his back. He lunged forward and locked his teeth around Adoff’s neck.
“Wake up!” Conan hissed. “Get your head out of the clouds.” He let go of Adoff’s neck. “You have a lot of growing up to do.” And then he stalked off and left Adoff to think.
